Chapter 8

Juxtaposition and irony are used throughout the story. In chapter 8, Luis is in jail he is in his lows point of life, but he has the creativity to still write poems. I think Luis is using juxtaposition to get his point across. He is comparing the creativity of a poem to the soul-draining surround of a jail. Luis is embracing it like of one of the activists he would not let his voice get forgotten. Luis later in school begin to write more poetry and found his own voice. Which is a big change from when he was a kid. When he was a kid he was shy and afraid of the world, but now he not afraid of saying what is on his mind. Another example is Luis saying Words glory and pain to describe a drunk a man. This showing the man is drunk to hide this pain. Which allows him to speak with glory because he doesn't realize what he is saying. Which allows him to express his thought about something that causes him pain. The whole book there are detail just goes to show what Luis is trying to express and how he is dealing with it.

  1. Since I have to disagree with your blog for this assignment, I mean no harm man, forgive me. I disagree with your opinion that he is in his lowest point of his life while in jail. He has already experienced being jail before so this is not his first time, but this case was just worse than the others. If anything, his experience in jail this time opened up newer opportunities and realizations among himself and another individual. It made Luis rethink his boundaries between his rival gang, Sangras. He appreciates the art they have done and bonded with one of their own members. Although I see what you mean by his lowest point of his life, this experience in jail has turned many things around for Luis. A person saw his potential and believed he never belonged in jail, thus his act to bail Luis out of jail. This was a forgiving and mind changing opportunity for Luis as he sets out for another chance to grow and change.
